..........After an absence of some weeks, I return with a sense of urgency even greater than before, and with an accompanying sense of gloom new to me in its intensity. Along with these feelings, I find myself also deeply moved by the communications and thoughts I've gotten from wonderfully intelligent people who've been reading some of my posts—plain, regular, perceptive citizens of the kind once common but now all too rare—the kind that A Nation Gone Blind cried out for, treasured, and lamented the absence of.

..........No one in the nation can save us now unless it's this kind of common people, those who by the miracle of their own native intelligence, curiosity, and love of life have remained both independent in thought and independently perceptive even while living in a nation whose population, including its leaders, have in effect—and disastrously—gone blind, deaf, and dumb.

..........If that sentence seems too strongly put and therefore careless or irresponsible, let me humbly suggest that a reading of A Nation Gone Blind: America in an Age of Simplification and Deceit might lead you toward feeling otherwise, as might also a reading of some of the other books you'll find links to in what follows.

..........For now, though, on the subject of those ordinary Americans who alone of all people can save us from the war, tyranny, and destruction of the republic that now appear to be all but inevitable, let me show you this letter, which I received early last month from a reader I'd never heard of before and whom I'll identify here as "David."

....................02:36 AM 2/1/2007

....................Eric, I've been perusing your website for a day or two. Found the link on my dad's
....................web browser. He recently died from emphysema, the legacy of a fire-fighting
....................career, leaving me with an old computer and a library full of 9.11 books that
....................matches pretty closely your list [of books] on Food For Thought 11.4.G

....................Much of this is not totally new material for me, who smelled a rat the day it all came
....................down, could see the lie in Bush's eye. Even here in western A——, the skies were
....................suddenly so clear and quiet that it made you stop and think, and think deep, about
...................."ready-made over-reaction." My dad felt incredible empathy for all the firemen's
....................families that day, because he knew exactly what it had to be like in the unbeliev-
....................able chaos at Ground Zero. He had also been in charge of the airport fire station at
....................Hong Kong during his career, and knew enough about jet aircraft to start questioning
....................all sorts of other assumptions.

....................Anyway, when I got to your "escape plan" page (FFT2.1.2007), it occurred to me
....................that one of the biggest dangers of the internet is that it gives you this amazing sense
....................of community amongst like-minded folks all over the world, but when the shit really
....................hits the fan, which it most surely will some day soon, in all likelihood all those people
....................we might network with will be beyond reach and nowhere to be found. And survival
....................is a tough act to pull off alone, so it seems to me that real community amongst
....................neighbourhoods is far stronger and more important than links across cyberspace.
....................Interdependence has more going for it than independence.

....................But carry on though, through the jungle. Truth beckons.

....................David

..........
·..........·..........·

This is a letter I treasure as much as any I've received, and I'm happy to be able to say that a correspondence between me and David has continued. What especially sets the letter apart for me? Like David, and his father, a close friend of mine had a father, a working man though not a fireman, who also "smelled a rat the day it all came down" but had no one to talk to about it and no idea of where to find things to read about his practical, observing man's sense of tragedy, treason, crime, and fraud. In that case, I was able, through my close friend, to provide a list of books—much like the list that David's father later found in FFT 11.4.G, although then that post didn't yet exist.

..........But here, in the case of David's father, was a thinking person whom I had been able to help without even knowing it—a person I had reached via my web site, or maybe, more accurately, a person who'd reached me through my web site.

..........But there's more to it than that. David's father was a fireman. As David wrote, his father "felt incredible empathy for all the firemen's families that day," in large part because he knew what it would have been like to be there. But he also had something more than that fellow-feeling, passion, and empathy: He also had an experienced eye for signs of arson and other kinds of fraud and crime in relation to fires—and, I dare say, he had an experienced eye, too—like the father of my close friend—for signs of what it actually is that makes buildings collapse.

..........I posted that list of 9/11 books on January 7, 2007. A month later, on February 1, 2007, David wrote me saying that his father had "had it on [his] web browser," and that his father had "recently died from emphysema, the legacy of a fire-fighting career, leaving me with an old computer and a library full of 9.11 books that matches pretty closely your list."

..........That means that David's father died within five weeks or so after my posting went up. Clearly, he'd found those 9/11 books on his own, from other sources, not dependent on me—and I'll bet he'd read them, too. I wish I could have met David's father. I wish he and I could have talked. Or at the very least I wish that we could have corresponded. But he's gone. I only wish he weren't.

·..........·..........·

..........People like David's father are alone the ones who can save us. Among those many, many, many who can't save us—and who won't save us but will more happily send us to the satanic internment camps themselves—are people like Nancy Pelosi, Hillary Clinton, Barrack Obama, and John Edwards, along with hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of the other liars, gatekeepers, and traitors like Frank Rich, Matthew Rothschild, Alexander Cockburn, Nicholas Lemann, Bill Keller, Robert Silvers, Ariana Huffington, Amy Goodman, Katrina vanden Heuvel, and David Corn—those who are in clinical denial; are preternaturally ignorant non-readers; have been bought off and silenced (their consciences cancer-ridden and dead) by hush-money in the form of contributions from corporations, foundations, media, or government; or who are in fact cowards to the very last molecule of their souls, scared to death, fatuous quislings clinging to the last corrupt hope that they will be spared, treated well, given preferential treatment in return for services faithfully rendered when the time comes that Cheney- and Bush- and William Kristal-style fascism at last settles upon the land and the trains are loaded up and their engines pointed toward the ready-and-waiting Halliburton camps.

..........Absurd? If only it were. In the absence of 9/11 Truth being used to expose, impeach, try, convict, and punish—whether by imprisonment for life or by death—the chief of the many treasonous figures in the Bush-Cheney administration—in the absence of that last hope for purgation and renewal, the United States of America is not a candidate for but is destined for totalitarianism. As the lay scholar of these matters, Randall Tillotson, points out, it's no longer (given the probable absence of 9/11 Truth as catalyst for justice) a question of whether but a question only of when.

.........."It's clear that a totalitarian state is going to come to the U.S. someday, and sooner rather than later," Tillotson writes, and then goes on: "The question to ask is why would 'they' need or want to do this?"

..........Tillotson's "they" doesn't refer just to Bush and Cheney, but it refers to something more like Webster Tarpley's "rogue state" or "invisible government," which is to say those same corporate-intelligence-military sectors and elements that got the ignorant, naive, scared, shallow, dry-drunk George W. Bush to hand over the U.S. government to them lock, stock, and barrel on the afternoon of 9/11 when he finally got back to the White House after his supposedly runnin'-scared careerings around the skies of the land.

..........And what plans do these guys hope to bring to fruition if we don't stop them first by reclaiming our own "government"? Well, there are the ready-to-go bio-warfare agents, with their ability to "[lose] whole city populations, making the 9/11 slaughter look like a mere car accident." There's the neo-con idea of "demand destruction of 90% or more of humanity" (destruction means killing), a notion actually put forth as a real proposal by a scientist in Texas whose colleague, Forrest M. Mims, names Doctor Doom. Read about him for yourself.

..........I know Randall Tillotson well, have known him well, in fact, for a good length of time, and I can vouch for his level-headedness, common sense, and sanity—but I can also vouch for his voracious reading, which is the cause of his very possibly sounding hyperbolic if not mad—but only to those, let it be made perfectly clear, who have read less than he has, and those, indeed, make up (just as "they" want it) the great, great majority of Americans, who, as ANGB argues, have gone blind. Tillotson writes, reflecting yet more of his own reading, that "We're living in what James Howard Kunstler, in The Long Emergency, calls the "Converging Catastrophes of the Twenty-first Century." These guys ["they"] are clearly aware of how fragile life with a capital "L" is now and [how] it will be even more so in the future."

..........And so we're faced with a very simple question: Do we really want to let "them"—"Dr. Doom" and the "rogue state" and the "invisible government"—not only get away with the crimes they've already committed, but also go ahead and do whatever else they want with us? with the nation? with the world? Frank Rich, in his most effetely coy and arch manner, would doubtless make out such a question to be one from a naif, a less-than-contemptible hyperbolist, a "conspiracy theorist," a "nut case." But what I say is this: I say, the hell with the liars and gatekeepers. I say, the hell with Frank Rich. I say, the hell with Nancy Pelosi, the hell with Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, and John Edwards, and I say the hell with those hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of others who have seen and must know the full and true extent of the crimes already committed and even so remain liars, gatekeepers, and traitors, like Rich himself—or like Matthew Rothschild, Alexander Cockburn, Bill Keller, Robert Silvers, Ariana Huffington, Amy Goodman, Katrina vanden Heuvel, Nicholas Lemann, David Corn, Thomas de Zengotita, etc., etc., etc., etc., etc.

..........Because the truth is this: The extraordinarily simple question before us is anything but deluded, naive, wrong-headed. It's anything but the ranting of some uninformed nutcase.

..........The extraordinarily simple question before us is in fact a question made possible and posed for us by the very best-informed, the very best of researchers, those who are the most patriotic, the most dedicated to the welfare of their nation and of the world. The opposite is also true: It's not those who are asking this extraordinarily simple question who are the "nutcases." No, it's absolutely clear—to anyone who cares to look, to find out, or to know—that the gatekeepers, the professional liars, the cover-up artists who are what they are whether through outright delusion or through the quisling and cowardly hope that in the ruinous aftermath they'll be taken good care of, spared, and favored by the regime. Fat chance. The regime will turn on them the same as it will turn on everyone else. And so the fact is, in the end, that it's these who are ignorant, deluded, or over their heads in complicity and who are back-pedaling madly in the vain hope of favor and survival—it's these, Frank Riches the lot of them, who are in actual fact and in real point of truth the "nut cases."
·..........·..........·

..........No? Not so? You won't go along with these arguments? Well, in the interest of clarification and of persuasion, let me suggest that we consider, very briefly, two points about the nation's first post-WWII coup d'état (the 1963 assassination of JFK) and about its second post-WWII coup d'état (the self-inflicted attack, the black flag op, of 9/11).

..........First, it's clear that our history changed radically on November 22, 1963, and did for a very clear reason. That is, when the rogue forces assassinated JFK, they then used that enormous and treasonous crime for the purpose of permanently taking power over the direction and policies of the United States. If you don't believe this, simply consider the history of the presidency from LBJ (and even he's ambiguous) on through George W. Bush. The fact is that since LBJ,¹ no president of the U.S. has ever not been either a pawn or a henchman of the invisible—that is, of the real—government, or has not been (most, most vividly clear in the case of George W. Bush)² a patsy used by it.

..........Since November 22, 1963, then, the United States has in reality existed under the power and hidden authority of a government mounted and maintained by those whom Webster G. Tarpley, in his great, great book, 9/11 Synthetic Terror: Made in USA, calls "synthetic terrorists" The assassination of JFK consisted of the explicit seizing of power by these terrorists, and the complex and extremely long-planned atrocities of 9/11 existed as their means of consolidating that power once and for all.

..........Consider for a moment this huge difference between 11/22/1963 and 9/11/2001. After the Kennedy assassination, no effort was made to pass bills akin to the "Patriot Act," stripping away civil rights and permitting extraordinary new powers to the visible government should "another terrorist attack" occur. After the Kennedy assassination, no effort was made to pass bills akin to the War Commissions Act of 2006, stripping away habeas corpus from the nation's prisoners and its citizens for the first time in a western nation since the early 14th Century. After the Kennedy assassination, no effort was made to neuter the precedent of the Posse Comitatus Act, making it possible for a standing army to be used inside the nation to control the domestic civilian population. After the Kennedy assassination, no secret fiddling was done to weaken the Insurrection Act, further dissipating if not eliminating "strict prohibitions on military involvement in domestic law enforcement." After the Kennedy assassination, no contracts were given to the vice president's dearest corporation so that it could build, as Paul Joseph Watson reports, "Halliburton Detention Camps for Political Subversives."

·..........·..........·

..........John W. Whitehead, of The Rutherford Institute, recently wrote—referring to the Military Commissions Act of 2006—that "last fall. . . the Bush Administration pushed for the inclusion of two stealth provisions into a mammoth defense budget bill. The additions made it easier for the government to declare martial law and establish a dictatorship."

..........Whitehead titles his essay "The late, Great American Nation," and in it he declares, absolutely correctly, that "We live in a fundamentally different country since 9/11." And the reason it's "a fundamentally different country" is that Americans, as they've historically done, no longer mistrust their leaders and thus insist upon passing and maintaining laws to control the ambitions of those leaders. Instead, since 9/11, it's now the leaders who mistrust the people and who insist upon passing and maintaining laws to control those people.

.........."Since the days of our Founding Fathers," Whitehead continues, "when King George III used his armies to terrorize and tyrannize the colonies, the American people have understandably distrusted the use of a national military force to intervene in civilian affairs, except in instances of extreme emergency and limited duration."

....................Hence, as a sign of the Founders' concern that the people not be under the
....................power of a military government, control of the military was vested in a civilian
....................government, with a civilian commander-in-chief. And the Posse Comitatus
....................Act of 1878 furthered those safeguards against military law, making it a crime
....................for the government to use the military to carry out arrests, searches, seizure
....................of evidence and other activities normally handled by a civilian police force.

..........And it is, of course, precisely that Act of 1878, along with the Insurrection Act of 1807, that our leaders of 2006 saw fit to weaken, eliminate, or find some way to get around. And the result isn't a happy one:

....................Under these new provisions [of the War Commissions Act of 2006], the
....................president can now use the military as a domestic police force in response
....................to a natural disaster, disease outbreak, terrorist attack or to any "other con-
....................dition." According to the new law, Bush doesn't even have to notify Con-
....................gress of his intent to use military force against the American people—he
....................just has to notify them once he has done so. The defense budget provision's
....................vague language leaves the doors wide open for rampant abuse. As writer
....................Jane Smiley noted, "the introduction of these changes amounts, not to an
....................attack on the Congress and the balance of power, but to a particular and
....................concerted attack on the citizens of the nation. Bush is laying the legal
....................groundwork to repeal even the appearance of democracy.

..........Well, if the eminently gifted Jane Smiley thinks something is up, something must be up. Whitehead himself writes that the changes we've mentioned have "made it easier for the government to declare martial law and establish a dictatorship," blunt words that Americans are unlikely to be able to take seriously—any more than they're able to take the word "junta" seriously—as A Nation Gone Blind argues and as Whitehead also tends to suggest when he writes that "modern Americans, primed by television pablum and ignorant of their history, have a tendency to trust people in office simply because they appear to share a common faith, say the right things or come from a certain region of the country"—or, as A Nation Gone Blind puts it, because they're familiar.

.........."The Founding Fathers would have literally been up in arms over Bush's actions," writes Whitehead, while we, in our nation gone blind, scarcely pay attention, have little or no idea of what's going on, don't even think to take it seriously, while Frank Rich and his countless clones serve as pied pipers, playing their ten-dollar word-tunes as the entire coast-to-coast pack of know-nothings tumbles and frolics behind them, drawing nearer and nearer to cliff's edge.

..........But we're doomed if we don't pay attention. Whitehead himself acknowledges not only the reality of the Halliburton detention camps but has a chilling word for this nation of pablum, ignorance, and Frank Richianism when he says that "Americans are incredibly naive if they believe those camps being built are just for illegal aliens."

..........Well, Frank Rich, Matthew Rothschild, Alexander Cockburn, Bill Keller, Ariana Huffington, Amy Goodman, Robert Silvers, Katrina vanden Heuvel, Nicholas Lemann, David Corn, Thomas de Zengotita and you myriad despicable, vile, traitorous others, I'll see ya' in da camps at such time as Cheney, along with a few choice agents, generals, and intelligence czars, blows up a chunk, say, of central Philadelphia, once again blames the murderous disaster on the "terrorists," and subsequently orders the Smirking Chimp to declare martial law—a state of affairs when, as Whitehead explains, "there would be no rules, no protections, no judicial oversight and no elections."

..........Did it once. Why not twice?

..........And do we still want to let "them" actually do all this? Are Nancy Clinton and Hillary Pelosi and Frank Corn and David Lemann all still going to go on pretending our situation is—well, normal at a time when, as Whitehead puts it, "A pattern is emerging, predicated on one horrific incident in 2001. The current administration is laying the groundwork for a military state, and this is our final wake-up call"?

.........."One horrific incident," right you are, and that one planned, accomplished, and brought about by the good old back-slapping boys themselves. But we don't believe that, and so the camps grow apace, the Pelosis and Clintons diddle and fiddle while the attacks on Iran—whether to include or not to include nuclear weapons—draw ever closer, increasingly feared and suspected even by the Russians.

..........All the way back in November of 2004, Paul Craig Roberts wrote an essay called "There Is No One Left to Stop Them." Back then, he opened by saying only that "The United States is in dire straits. Its government is in the hands of people who connect to events neither rationally nor morally." Bad enough, god knows, but nowhere near as bad as now. Back then, Roberts concluded by writing only, first, that the Bushiscti "intend to set the U.S. on a course of long and debilitating war," and then that "There is no one left in the Bush administration, the CIA, or the military to stop them."

..........And now? We're talking now about totalitarianism, we're talking now about world-encompassing war, we're talking now about concentration camps, martial law, the abomination of routine and institutionalized torture, the use of nuclear weapons after half a century of keeping them at bay—and still we're not going to get sane and reasonable about 9/11 truth and use that truth of Bush administration crime, treason, and murder to nail the bastards before they go any farther?

..........Pelosi and the rest can go to hell as far as I'm concerned. As far as I'm concerned, they're the enemy every bit as surely as Bush and Cheney are the enemy. Every bit as surely as Frank Rich and Bill Keller and Amy Goodman and all the rest of "them" are also the enemy. No, there's nobody left but us. Nobody left but decent, plain, observant, experienced, intelligent people who can see fraud and deception and lies for what they are, murder for what it is, and treason, the same. People like David's father, who understand the moment he saw it what a great lie was being perpetrated not only on the nation but on the world.

..........He, David's father, is dead. We owe him the honor, at the very least, of following his example. We owe it to him to get smart, like he was. We owe it to him to look closely, like he did. We owe it to him to feel deeply, like he did. And we owe it to him to act.

..........Time is running out. Follow the advice of the fine and long-experienced Sherwood Ross, and impeach. Follow the advice of the thoughtful and perceptive Peter Byrne, and impeach. Follow even my advice, and impeach. It's an absolute imperative. Impeach now or die.
