..........Here's a list of books—every one of them scholarly, reliable, and sound—on the subject of 9/11. I discussed some of them back in January 2007, in "Food for Thought 11.4.G," and you can go there if you'd like a bit of description. The books vary considerably, some—like Nafeez Mosaddeq Ahmed's The War on Truth—beginning in Afghanistan during the Soviet invasion and tracing the causative and formative history of things all the way from there up to 9/11 itself, and beyond. Others, like the David Ray Griffin books, confine themselves, much more narrowly, to the events immediately surrounding 9/11. A combination of these two approaches makes Webster Tarpley's extraordinarily knowledgeable 9/11 Synthetic Terror: Made in USA perhaps unique. Its almost super-human thoroughness puts it in direct competition with Michael C. Ruppert's trail-blazing and still-indispensable Crossing the Rubicon: The Decline of the American Empire at the End of the Age of Oil.

..........There's not a book on the list that I don't recommend highly. Still, I've not only got my favorites but I've got a fair number of ideas about the character of these books, how each might best be used—or be most useful—or in what order they might best be read, and so on. If anyone is the least intimidated by the list and would be open to some un-pushy and well-intended suggestions about how to get started, I hope such a person wouldn't hesitate to write me.

..........Good luck. I pray to non-god for us all.

2)

..........The following is part of a longer email sent to me by a long-time political observer, correspondent, and columnist whose name you'd recognize if I told it to you. I wrote him a couple of weeks ago to let him know how impressed I'd been (and remain) by the conclusion he'd drawn in one of his pieces. Though he had written only obliquely, or in an exploratory way, about 9/11 as an inside job and about the uses that it's been to in the Bush administration's undeclared war on the American people, I asked him what he thought, in general, about both things, 9/11 itself and the war on the American people. Here's part of what he said in reply:

....................You ask about my thinking re what's been going down [about 9/11 and its long after-
....................math]. Well, I don' know that I think any better than anybody else but the whole busi-
....................ness is beginning to have the appearance of a conspiracy. As I wrote in [a recent]
....................piece, it is unbelievable to most Americans that 9/11 could be an inside job. But stand
....................back and look at the whole picture: the violations of international treaties, the desec-
....................ration of the Constitution, the election manipulations in 2000 and 2004 such as the
....................purging of valid voters from the rolls, the scrapping of the nuclear arms pact, the tramp-
....................ling of the germ warfare treaty, the resort to torture and kidnapping and worse. The in-
....................vasions of Afghanistan and Iraq, both violations of international law. The politicizing of
....................all phases of government, from OSHA to EPA to the National Parks to the firings of the
....................special prosecutors, to the reliance on No Bid contracts pouring billions into the coffers
....................of GOP backers, and on and on. And just look at the mass arrests made all over the
....................Middle East and contrast that with the handful of trials. Why so few trials? I think it's
....................because most of those arrested aren't guilty of any terrorist intent against the United
....................States. A gang that could fabricate all these crimes is capable of 9/11. I think we
....................even need to ask ourselves whether Osama bin Laden isn't a shill for his family, that
....................he wasn't deliberately set in motion to attack U.S. interests in the Middle East in order
....................to drag USA more deeply into the region as protectors of the Saudi regime. As wit-
....................nesses to the agony of 9/11 it truly behooves us to have a genuine, nonpartisan
....................study made that will look at some of the vermin that got swept under the rug.

3)

..........And here is an email that I sent not long ago to another long-time political observer, researcher, and columnist whose name you'd recognize if I told it to you. I admire both of these men enormously, and I'm impressed equally by their caution, integrity, good sense, solidity of reasoning, and by their sympathies in general. In the email below, I followed up on an email exchange between us of some time past that had to do with the idea held by many people (and strongly opposed by me) that the Bush administration is and has all along been merely "incompetent" and "inept" rather than insidious, ruthless, malignant, and most, most highly purposeful in its behavior. I think that the letter speaks for itself as to my own stance on the matter. What worries and troubles me is that I've had no response.

....................Dear X,

..............................I grow more and more worried—no: horrified—by what the Bush regime
....................seems to be preparing for. Last August, I wrote you about your column "A——,"
....................in which you argued that the administration used its own anti-government stance
....................as a way to hide its ineptitude. When they failed at something, the Bushists suc-
....................cessfully blamed "government" even though their own "incompetence" was the
....................real cause.

.............................. My letter ended: "When will the pundits recognize that this is one of the
....................least inept administrations in U.S. history? With 'ineptitude' as its more-than-
....................perfect cover, the government goes on committing crime after crime."

..............................Has your own view changed? Paul Craig Roberts says that "the Bush
....................regime has got away with more than I thought possible, perhaps because
....................most of Congress and the American public cannot imagine the degree of
....................insanity that lies behind the Bush administration."
Because they can't im-
....................agine the truth, he adds, "Most Americans who have turned against the
....................regime think that the administration is incompetent."

.............................. Roberts goes on: "If Americans understood the enormity of the de-
....................ception behind the invasion of Iraq (and Afghanistan) and the pending attack
....................on Iran, Bush and Cheney would be impeached and turned over to the War
....................Crimes Tribunal at the Hague, and AIPAC would be forced to register as a
....................foreign agent."

..............................Doesn't the case appear valid that not incompetence but diligent plan-
....................ning for martial law or single-branch government may well have been one of
....................the chief forces at work all along when one considers the logical sequence,
....................first, of 9/11 itself, then of the Patriot Act and its subsequent renewal, later
....................the War Commissions Act of 2006, also changes to the Insurrection Act
....................and its influence on Posse Comitatus, and now the "National Security
....................Presidential Directive" and the "Homeland Security Presidential Directive"
....................of this past May 9, giving the president extraordinary unitary powers in the
....................event of "emergency"?

..............................How can it be, and why is it, that so little expression of opposition
....................or alarm—or even just realistic appraisal—finds its way into the media
....................in light of such foreboding and apparently conscious, step by step "pro-
....................gress" as this? Is it STILL just "incompetence"?

..............................With enormous respect,
..............................Eric Larsen
